Final Project - Negative

Title: Negative

Meaning: This installation is a take on the world of negatives. The light is blocked by a reflective shield that bounces to the top, leaving the floor unlit. The audience would be able to go under the light to experience the negative, as they would normally be lit if under a light, but here, they wouldn't, which also goes back to the title. This whole installation's purpose is to trick the audience, to trick their senses, as light is behaving negatively to what they assumed.

Week 5

Title: Beauty of Time
Meaning: This is just a model of what a finished installation would look like. The finished installation would be life size, where people could walk through the path (the pig is the scale for people in this model). This installation was to show the beauty of time, as at a certain time, the shadows would align with the path, letting the audience experience the magic, as they walk through it.

Week 2 - Clay

This week, we were able to get a hold of clay, which is a form of art that I hadn't touched since my early days of middle school. It was fun getting back in touch, but it just wasn't my cup of tea.

Task 1 - Eyes Closed
For this task, we had to create an object in 5 minutes with our eyes closed. It was a fun exercise to be able to create something without one of the most important senses.

Title: Stuck Snake
This final product of the eyes closed exercise was a strange object, but it kind of fit what I was feeling when I had my eyes closed. I got kind of stuck, since I felt that the objects that I was making in my hands kept turning into the same object over, and over, and over again. So when I opened my eyes, I was kind of baffled I made this object. I called it "Stuck Snake" because I feel like I was the snake, and I got kind of stuck during this exercise, because I kept making the same shapes over and over again.

Task 2 - Translation from Music to Object
For this exercise, we listened to music, but we were able to create something that reflected the rhythm.

This piece is my interpretation of the music that we heard. The spiral at the side represents the omnipresent hum. The holes inside the 'bowl' are the beats and rhythm.

Task 3 - Igloo
For this task, we were given a choice to make either a car, or an igloo.

Task 4
For this assignment, we were given the task of creating an object that represented us.

This was the first object I created. The leech represented me, as I saw myself as leeching off my parents, while the flat, disgusting part that's drooling down from the leech represents my guilt towards my parents, as I decided to go an art school. Since this object was a bit too big to bring back home, and also back to school, I decided to go with something smaller, but still work with the same idea.

Title: Guilt House
This follows the same idea of the leech object, except I put it in a house setting. The reason why I chose a house, is because it's an exact portrayal of the common phrase "Don't judge a book by its cover." The house represents what people see, when they look at me, but when you turn it over, you'll see that the house is destroyed with lots of scratches and bumps, to show what guilt I carry. I would put this in an area where lots of art students gather, where they can just come across it and pick it up. The title would be there, and I would like to see what kind of personal emotions it could reflect for them, as I have heard that most artists garner the same emotion that I carry.

Week 1 (Automatic Writings and 2D~3D Paper)

In our first lesson, we were given the task of doing automatic writings. Although the task was simple, it's what we had to do afterwards that was difficult. We had to create out of nonsense.

The automatic writing that I did were just lyrics to TV shows and my hunger for food at that time, but to create something out of this, pretty much stumped me.

I attempted to list words that would suit this passage best (below).

From this, I can make a minor plan for what I would create out of this.

Size: About 30x30cm.

Volume: Would have a large hole in the middle to fill it with stuff (eg; brownies)

Colour Sense: It would be a mixture of different colours, such as golden brown (to indicate nostalgia), pink (to indicate the strawberry cakes) and so on.

Where to put it: I would put it in front of a television screen that's showing old Cartoon Network shows.

Conditions of surroundings: The installation would be stuck to the television screen, so that the audience would have to look through the hole to see the old CN shows, but it would be obstructed by different things, such as brownies.

Steps of production: Not applicable yet, as no visual plan has been made.

The next automatic writing we did was to list objects. From the list, I listed out words such as, chair, headphones, but the one that stuck out to me the most was the word "dildo". I was probably running out of words by then, but as it was the strangest one of out of them, I made a mind map out of it.

This next picture is a picture that comes from my collection that, when I look back to when I collected these, I cringe. This, is a Kuroyukihime figurine...

You see, back when I was in my teenage years, I was very into anime. Too into anime, you could say. I would purchase these figurines and posters of anime girls and post them on my wall. Today, I cringe at the fact that I even did this. If I could, I would go back to the days of when I did collect these and just tell myself to stop. Just. Stop. Today, many of the figurines are gone, but some still remain just as a reminder of my darkest days as a weeaboo.

2D ~ 3D Paper

Title: Korean Teenager #18101995
Meaning: On the outer side, the paper looks normal and well folded, but as you go further down, you'll see that the paper is cramped and teared up, which I wanted to portray the disgust that I have on myself for making my parents worry by pursuing the career of an artist.

Title: Soul Gate
Meaning: The meaning is very straightforward. At the beginning, you see that the content of the soul is very empty, indicating that the pieces of the soul are missing, but as you go further down, the contents of the soul come back, but the door must close to contain the fragments of the soul. When I made this, I didn't want any deep meaning behind this. All I wanted to say through this was "Get your sh*t together." to myself, and anyone else who this might apply to.

3D Paper

Title: Two Face
Meaning: The piece, inspired by a certain Batman character, is about a face being constructed from scratch, very much like a baby's personality building up along with its life. However, a second face is put on top of the previous face, as the face has to put up another persona, to appeal to the rest of the world, but in the end, the second persona only destroys the person.
